Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Visit Kenya
February 15, 2008
As announced by President Bush Thursday, February 14, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday, February 18, “to support the work of the former Secretary General, and to deliver a message directly to Kenya's leaders and people: There must be an immediate halt to violence, there must be justice for the victims of abuse, and there must be a full return to democracy.”
Secretary Rice will voice U.S. support for the ongoing political reconciliation negotiations that will help Kenya move beyond its post-election crisis. She plans to meet with negotiation mediator, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, as well as President Mwai Kibaki, opposition leader Raila Odinga, and members of Kenya’s civil society and business community.
The Secretary’s trip will underscore the commitment of the United States to assisting both sides with the crucial task of agreeing on a common way forward that will bring peace and stability to Kenya, and help the country regain its position as a democratic and economic leader in the region.
Media Note: The Secretary will hold a Press Briefing at the end of her discussions on Monday afternoon. The press availability will take place at the Residence of the Ambassador of the United States to Kenya. Exact time will be announced on Monday morning, February 18, 2008.
