US Citizens Donate Supplies to Kenyans Displaced by Violence

May 28, 2008

Ambassador Michael E. Ranneberger will present Certificates of Transfer to nine government and nongovernmental organizations, which have been designated to distribute over $2 million (KSH 124 million) in humanitarian commodities that were donated by a church in the United States.  The ceremony of transfer will take place on Monday, June 9, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the Residence of the U.S. Ambassador in Muthaiga.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Utah in the far west of the United States responded to the humanitarian crisis in Kenya by calling on its members to contribute to a specific relief effort to help the people of Kenya.

The Church members put together 20 forty-foot containers filled with blankets, hygiene products, school supplies, dry milk and nutritional food as well as kits for orphanages and newborn care, which will be used directly by those who suffered during this period and continue to seek assistance to return to their homes.

The containers are now in Mombasa.  The Certificates of Transfer authorize the partner agencies to take possession of them and deliver them directly to Kenyans in their districts.

The donation is from a private American organization but the logistics for shipment and distribution were funded and coordinated by the Kenya-U.S. Liaison Office (KUSLO), a U.S. Department of Defense unit within the U.S. Embassy.

KUSLO worked closely with the Kenyan Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Special Programmes, the Ministry of Education, and the U.S Agency of International Development, and consulted closely with the Ministry of Health, Provincial and District Administrations, local coordination networks, the Kenya Red Cross Society and religious leaders to plan for logistics and distribution of these humanitarian commodities.

Note to Editors/Correspondents---Reporters/camera crews assigned to cover this event are requested to plan to arrive at the Ambassador’s Residence on Muthaiga Road by 2.30 p.m.
