Senior U.S. Government Official to Brief Press on Refugee Issues in East Africa

The Acting Assistant Secretary of State at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, Samuel Witten, will visit Kenya from August 4-7, 2008 to learn more about the U.S. Government’s refugee relief and resettlement programs.   He will visit refugees at Daadab camp, meet with Kenyan government officials, and consult with UN and NGO partners to see how the U.S. can better meet the assistance and resettlement needs of refugees living in Kenya.  Mr. Witten will also visit Addis Ababa during his trip to East Africa. 

The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration will provide over $1 billion world-wide in FY 2008, and allocates U.S. Government contributions for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and those non-governmental agencies working with refugees and conflict victims worldwide. 

Mr. Witten will brief the press on the current state of refugee affairs on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. at the U.S. Embassy, United Nations Avenue, Gigiri.
