Kenya Travel Alert

Continuing Unrest

December 31, 2007

US Mission to Kenya urges all Americans to remain vigilant and aware of their personal security in light of continuing unrest following national election results. U.S. citizens are encouraged to remain in place as security both within Nairobi and the country at large is unpredictable.

Domestic air travel has been suspended. While international flights continue to operate to the international airports in Mombasa and Nairobi, the main thoroughfare to the Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Uhuru Highway) is blocked and travel to the airport is not advised.

Rioting, looting and arson as well as confrontations between armed police and protestors have occurred in various parts of the country. Some deaths are reported. Major thoroughfares leading into and out of the capital have been closed and travel within many parts of Nairobi continues to be restricted by government officials.

The western city of Kisumu appears to have quieted in the past hours but the US Mission to Kenya continues to encourage all Americans in the area to remain in place. As always, US Mission to Kenya recommends that all Americans review their personal security checklist and diligently maintain security measures.

Communications via SMS may be disrupted and may affect our warden text messaging system. If unable to reach the Embassy via SMS or cell phone, please e-mail appletonrh@state.gov. Domestic communication networks will continue to remain sluggish as they have been overwhelmed by domestic demand. The ability of the national networks to broadcast live feeds from Kenya has been suspended and information emanating from the country may be delayed.

Please consult wardens, counterparts and trusted members of the community for information about local security conditions in your area. Americans living or traveling in Kenya are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's travel registration website. The U.S Embassy is located on United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya; telephone (254) (20) 363-6000; fax (254)(20) 363-6410.
