Clashes in Moyale

March 14, 2012

Recent clashes in Moyale have left the city and its environs in a volatile state.  The Red Cross estimates that up to 57,000 people have fled the area, at least 48 have been killed and about 1200 reported as missing.   Approximately one thousand houses have been burned and at least two schools and several health facilities have been destroyed.  The majority of markets and schools in the district have remained closed since the beginning of the year.

The violence and unrest appear to center around electoral issues.  U.S. citizens are not being targeted.  U.S. citizens are urged to check conditions in Moyale before traveling to the area.
