2009 Warden Messages

April 27, 2009

The U.S. Embassy would like to alert you to the situation in Karatina, in the Nyeri area of the Central Province:

Violence between members of the outlawed Mungiki sect and residents continues. On Friday, a woman suspected of ties to the Mungiki was killed by vigilantes in Kinanoe village.

The police presence remains high in both districts, with traffic flow reported to be normal. If travel in the area is necessary, it is recommended to do so during daytime hours. However, the section of road between Kagio-Kerugoya and Kutus should be avoided, as it has been the scene of sporadic violence.
