2008 Warden Messages
Travel Warning- Sudan

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to threats made against the U.S. government and U.S. citizens in Sudan by a group calling itself "Al-Qaida in the Land of the Two Niles." These threats referenced the January 1, 2008 murders of two USAID employees in Khartoum and proclaimed the group's "jihad and fight against the United States of America and its allies of crusaders and apostates will continue." The Department of State continues to warn against all travel to Sudan, particularly in the Darfur area, where violence between government forces, rebel factions, and various armed militias continues.
American citizens who choose to travel to Sudan despite the existing Travel Warning, and those currently in Sudan, should review their security posture and take appropriate precautions. U.S. citizens living or traveling in Sudan should register their presence in Sudan with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the Department of State's website (http://travel.state.gov/) and obtain updated information regarding travel and security within Sudan. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.
