Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
October 1, 2011
This is to inform American citizens resident in or planning travel to Kenya that on October 1, 2011 a French national was kidnapped from a private residence on the popular tourist destination of Lamu Island on Kenya’s north coast. This follows the kidnapping and murder, respectively, of a British national wife and husband on September 10, 2011 at a coastal resort 30 kilometers north of Lamu Island. Non-essential U.S. Government travel to the entire Lamu County is suspended until November 1, 2011. On that date, the security situation will be reevaluated. U.S. Citizens are strongly encouraged to consider this information when planning travel to Lamu Island and Lamu County. Americans currently in Lamu should remain vigilant of their personal security.
